HONEST COMPARISON

QR Code Alternatives to Bitly (No Monthly Fee)

You need a QR code for your new product launch. Bitly's free tier gives you 2 QR codes a month. You need more than that. The next tier up is $10/month, and it only bumps you to 5 a month. You start searching for alternatives.

You need a QR code for your new product launch. You've used Bitly for link shortening before. You go to create a QR code and hit a wall: 2 per month on the free plan. You need more than that for one launch alone. You start searching for alternatives.

Bitly is a great link shortener. Their QR product is quota-limited at every tier — 2/month free, 5/month at $10/mo, 10/month at $29/mo, capping at 200/month even on the $199/mo Premium plan. No anti-phishing. No logo embedding on the free tier. For a small business running more than a couple of codes, that adds up fast. There are free alternatives that do the same thing – and some do more.

Truly Free QR gives you dynamic QR codes, scan analytics, custom colors, logo embedding, and never-expiring codes. For free. No subscription. No account. I built it because I refused to pay Bitly $420 a year to keep my restaurant menus working. Here are the real alternatives to Bitly QR, ranked honestly.

Verified July 2026: Bitly Changed Its Pricing Model

Most articles comparing Bitly QR pricing are quoting old numbers — including an earlier version of this one. I went back to bitly.com/pages/pricing to confirm before publishing this update, and the "$35/month Custom plan" structure this article used to describe no longer exists. Bitly restructured into five tiers: Free ($0/mo — 2 QR codes/month, 5 links/month, unlimited scans), Core ($10/mo, $120 billed annually), Growth ($29/mo, $348/year — their "Recommended" tier), Premium ($199/mo, $2,388/year), and custom-priced Enterprise. Notice what changed: Bitly's free tier now actually includes a small quota of QR codes with unlimited scans, instead of a hard "static only" wall. The catch is the quota — 2 per month on Free, 5 on Core — which caps out fast if you run more than one campaign or location.

The takeaway hasn't changed even though the numbers did: Bitly is quota-limited at every paid tier, and even their cheapest paid plan ($120/year) buys you 5 QR codes a month with 30 days of scan history. Truly Free QR gives you unlimited dynamic QR codes with no monthly quota, no expiration, and no per-code fee — for the reasons explained below.

Bitly QR vs. The Competition: Real Prices, Real Features

Alternative #1: QR Code Generator (qr-code-generator.com). Their free dynamic codes expire after 14 days. Paid plans start at $9 per month ($108 per year). That's cheaper than Bitly's Core tier but still a subscription. Their analytics are more detailed. They offer logo embedding. But the expiration trap is real. I've heard horror stories from business owners who printed codes and got deactivated on day 15.

Alternative #2: Beaconstac. $15 per month for the basic plan ($180 per year). They're enterprise-focused, so the features are robust: advanced analytics, integrations with CRMs, team access. But for a solo business owner or a small team, it's overkill. And their free tier? Dynamic codes expire after 7 days. That's even worse than QR Code Generator.

Alternative #3: QRCode Monkey. Free static codes. Dynamic codes require $19 per month ($228 per year). That's more than QR Code Generator but less than Bitly Core. Their dynamic codes don't expire as long as you pay. But they have no free dynamic tier at all. You pay or you use static.

Alternative #4: Truly Free QR. Unlimited dynamic QR codes, no monthly quota, no expiration, scan analytics, custom colors, logo embedding, anti-phishing Safe-Scan. Cost: $0. No subscription. No account. Funded by AdSense. The only tradeoff is you see ads on the generator dashboard. Not on the scan redirect. Not on your printed materials. Just on the website when you create codes.

Step-by-Step: How to Replace Bitly QR with Truly Free QR

Here's exactly how to migrate from Bitly to a free solution.

1. Go to trulyfreeqr.com
No account. No credit card. No "start free trial." Just the generator.
2. Identify the URLs you currently have in Bitly QR
Log into Bitly. Look at your QR codes. Make a list of the destination URLs. You'll recreate each one on Truly Free QR.
3. Create a new dynamic QR code for each destination
Paste the URL into my generator. Choose dynamic. Customize colors and logo if you want. Click generate. Download the QR code as SVG.
4. Test the new QR code
Scan it with your phone. Make sure it goes to the right place. Compare it to your old Bitly code. If the destination is the same, the user experience is identical.
5. Replace the QR code on your printed materials
If your materials are already printed with Bitly codes, you have two choices: keep paying Bitly, or reprint. This is why the expiration trap is so evil. For future materials, use Truly Free QR from the start.
6. Save the edit links for each code
Bookmark them. This is how you update destinations later. In Bitly, you log into your account to edit. In my system, you use a unique link. No account needed.
7. Monitor analytics on my dashboard
Each code has its own analytics page. You'll see scan counts, timestamps, device types, and location. Bitly's analytics are similar but more polished. Mine are functional and free.
8. Cancel your Bitly subscription
Once you've migrated, log into Bitly and cancel. Save that $420 a year. Buy something useful for your business – like inventory or advertising.

Why Truly Free QR Never Expires (And How We Pay for It)

Bitly charges $35 a month because they have hundreds of employees, a sales team, and venture capital investors. They need to show growth and profit. I don't. I'm a solo developer who built this tool because I got tired of subscription traps. My costs are server hosting (about $20 a month) and my time. Ad revenue from Google covers that.

The technical reason I can keep codes free: the redirect is cheap. Every time someone scans your QR code, my server does a tiny lookup and sends a 301 redirect. That costs me about 0.001 cents per scan. Even if your code gets 10,000 scans a month, my cost is 10 cents. Ad revenue from the dashboard easily covers that. Bitly's cost is similar. Their $35 price is mostly profit.

Safe-Scan is something Bitly doesn't offer. Before every redirect, I check the destination against Google Safe Browsing. If the link is known for malware or phishing, the scanner sees a warning. Bitly doesn't do this. If a hacker compromises your destination URL, Bitly will happily redirect your customers to malware. I won't. That's a feature I'm proud of.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my own custom domain with Truly Free QR like I can with Bitly?
Not yet. Bitly lets you use yourdomain.link for branded short links. I don't offer that. If you need custom domains, you'll need a paid tool or set up your own redirect server. For most small businesses, the default short domain (trulyfreeqr.com/abc123) is fine. Customers don't care about the domain; they care about the destination.
How does your analytics compare to Bitly's?
Bitly's analytics are more detailed and have better reporting dashboards. They show referrers, click maps, and integration with Google Analytics. Mine show scan counts by day, device type, and city-level location. For basic tracking – "How many people scanned my flyer?" – mine is sufficient. For enterprise-grade reporting, Bitly wins. But you pay $420 a year for that.
What happens if Truly Free QR goes out of business?
That's a valid concern with any free service. I have no plans to shut down, but if I did, I would give months of notice. You would need to reprint your QR codes or set up your own redirects. To protect yourself, you can point your Truly Free QR code to a URL you control (e.g., yourwebsite.com/qr). Then if my service goes down, you can change your DNS to point to a different redirect. That's an advanced tactic, but it gives you independence.
Does Bitly's free tier include dynamic QR codes?
As of July 2026, Bitly's free tier includes a quota of 2 QR codes per month with unlimited scans, up from the old static-only free tier. The quota is the real limit now, not the static/dynamic split — 2 a month runs out fast if you manage more than one menu, flyer, or campaign. Paid tiers raise the quota (5/month on Core at $10/mo, up to 200/month on Premium at $199/mo) but there's still a cap at every level. Truly Free QR has no monthly quota at any price.
How does Safe-Scan compare to Bitly's security?
Bitly does not proactively check destinations for malware. They rely on users reporting bad links. Safe-Scan uses Google Safe Browsing, which updates constantly. If a destination gets flagged, my system warns the scanner immediately. Bitly will keep redirecting until someone reports it. For protecting your customers, Safe-Scan is objectively better.
Can I migrate my existing Bitly QR codes to Truly Free QR without reprinting?
No. The QR code pattern encodes the short URL. Bitly's short URLs are different from mine. You cannot change the pattern without reprinting. This is why you should never print a QR code from a service that might expire or go away. Use Truly Free QR from the start, or use your own domain as a redirect layer.

Cancel Bitly today. Save $420 a year. Use Truly Free QR instead. Same functionality, better security, zero cost. Your wallet will thank you.
